KAPLAN UNIVERSITY

Business Needs
Kaplan had experienced incredible organizational growth over the past couple of years through acquisitions and their Exchange 2003 system had reached its storage capacity.  Faced with system instability and periodic outages it was time to redesign their current messaging architecture.  Additionally, they were planning on migrating to Exchange 2007 and needed insight and direction.

Business Solutions
Partnering with Microsoft, SouthEast Technologies worked with Kaplan on the redesign of their Exchange 2003 system to bring it much needed stability.  Capacity planning was the key as they had experienced a very rapid growth period initially and were expecting several thousand more users over the next few years.  By adding additional servers configured for high availability and performing accurate capacity planning calculations to satisfy the future needs, the environment was stabilized and migration planning for Exchange 2007 could begin.

Results
Kaplan is now undergoing the implementation of the Exchange 2003 stability plans which will provide them with the consistency needed in their present environment.  With stability comes peace of mind and time to plan proactively for future.

WYETH PHARMACEUTICALS

Business Needs
Wyeth was running on an unsupported version of Novell GroupWise and the system was not performing up to end-users and management’s expectations.  To begin utilizing the features and functions required a GroupWise upgrade was necessary.  In addition they needed to update their secure messaging solution with their existing and future secure business partners to meet strict compliance regulations.

Business Solutions
Wyeth worked with SouthEast Technologies to upgrade their GroupWise system to a more stable and supported version.  This solution delivered the features and functionality needed for the organization.  In addition, SouthEast was also able to work with Wyeth in becoming an authorized GroupWise 6.5 beta tester participant for Novell.  This allowed Wyeth users to actively take part in the features and functionality development of a future release of GroupWise at the time.
Once the GroupWise upgrade was complete, SouthEast began working with Wyeth on implementing a secure messaging solution with secure business partners to replace MCI mail gateways with more current technologies and less costly solutions.  The following new technologies were implemented to replace legacy hardware and software solutions.

  • Tumbleweed Messaging Management Server
  • VPNs
  • TLS Links
  • Individual S/MIME certificates
  • SSL links

Results
Wyeth now is on a supported messaging platform, utilizing a robust messaging solution that supports the required end-user and management functionality.  In addition they are now utilizing current secure messaging solutions that satisfy compliance regulations.

BRP is an international recreational products organization with a strong presence in North America. As a leader in delivering state-of-the-art recreational products, they are known for such products as Ski-Doo snowmobiles, Sea-Doo watercraft, Johnson and Evinrude outboard motors and Can-Am ATVs.
BRP (BOMBARDIER RECREATIONAL PRODUCTS)

Business Needs
BRP and its subsidiaries were running on disparate messaging systems and needed to migrate and consolidate their individual messaging systems into one global Exchange 2003 system.  Their Canadian and Scandinavian divisions were running Exchange 5.5, while their American division was running Novell GroupWise and their Austrian subsidiary Rotax was running Lotus Notes.  This made communication rather difficult at times with some messaging features not supported by the different platforms.

Business Solutions
By partnering with Computer Generated Solutions and Dell Professional Services, SouthEast Technologies was able to draft and document the technical processes for migrating Exchange 5.5 mailboxes to Exchange 2003 and provide a system health check of the Novell GroupWise system, which proved to be unstable during the migration process.  Once the GroupWise system was stable, the migration of GroupWise mailboxes could continue.  After completing the Exchange 5.5 and GroupWise migrations, we then focused on the Lotus Notes system in Linz, Austria.  By drafting a migration plan and coordinating the migration of mailboxes with the Rotax organization, SouthEast was able to migrate over 800 mailboxes in six weeks.

Results
BRP is now on a single messaging platform with 100% availability and functionality.  All users, regardless of where they are located can utilize a single messaging platform with full features and functionality.

Florida Power and Light (FPL) serves approximately 8 million customers throughout the state of Florida.  That is nearly half of the state’s population.  They are among the largest and fastest growing utility companies in the United States.  They have been recognized as an industry leader for their post-hurricane power restoration performance and have assisted other utility companies in Louisiana and Texas after hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
FLORIDA POWER AND LIGHT (FPL)

Business Need
FPL was utilizing a secure messaging solution to correspond with their secure business partners and to combat viruses, SPAM and other malware, however the product was not configured optimally to handle the volumes of SPAM entering their messaging system.  This sometimes resulted in legitimate email getting blocked or quarantined.  This required human intervention to review the quarantine queue and sort through thousands of messages to find a single legitimate message to release and deliver to the end-user.  This method was extremely inefficient, too many false positives were occurring and it began to have an impact on users.

Business Solutions
By working with FPL and their chosen secure messaging product, SouthEast was able to provide a solution which allowed FPL to continue utilizing their existing product by upgrading to a more current version which provided more sophisticated, accurate and automated methods of identifying SPAM and reducing the number of false positives by 99.9%.

Results
Today FPL does not have to dedicate an employee’s time to sifting through message queues to find legitimate email that has been flagged as SPAM.  The process is automated and much more accurate which greatly reduces the number of false positives.

Broward County is home to approximately 1.8 million people and represents one of the larger counties in Florida in terms of population.  Known for its beaches and tourism, the County is also home to several large employers, including American Express, Motorola and DHL Express.  Trade, tourism and transportation make up the larger industries where most residents are employed.
BROWARD COUNTY COMMISSION

Business Needs
Broward County Commission was running on a legacy Novell system that was proving difficult to maintain and lacked the features and functionality necessary for end-users and management.  In order to implement new solutions into their environment, it was necessary to migrate to a platform that made integration of third party solutions easier and less expensive to maintain.

Business Solutions
Migrating to Microsoft Active Directory and Exchange 2003 was the answer to the problem.  It provided the County with a less costly solution over time and allowed the seamless integration of necessary third party solutions and utilities.  SouthEast worked with the County’s IT staff to draft a migration strategy and developed a lab testing plan to migrate 5,000 GroupWise mailboxes to Exchange.

Results
The County is on the Microsoft platform and was able to implement the solutions necessary to integrate into their messaging system seamlessly, which has proven to be less costly in the long run.

LOONEY, RICKS, KISS

Business Needs
With LRK’s staff becoming more mobile, the need for seamless mobile messaging solutions to integrate into their existing messaging system became apparent.  The existing GroupWise system was proving to be cumbersome and rather expensive with the mobile messaging add-ons necessary to deliver the required solutions to the staff.

Business Solutions
The current GroupWise system was evaluated for the ability to provide future mobile messaging needs seamlessly and inexpensively. While the system could provide near solutions, they were more expensive, and it could not provide seamless solutions. It was determined that a migration to Microsoft Exchange was necessary.

Results
By working with LRK’s IT staff, SouthEast was able to migrate 200 GroupWise mailboxes to Microsoft Exchange 2003 seamlessly and transparently.  Today the organization is on the Microsoft Exchange platform and utilizing the many mobile messaging features native to Microsoft Exchange making it easier for LRK staff to continue being mobile but not be out of touch with their clients.

Florida International University

Business Needs
FIU was currently providing electronic messaging services for its staff and students on various different platforms which include: Lotus Notes and MiraPoint (POP3, IMAP) Mail.  There are approximately 1,800 Lotus Notes mailboxes and 8,000 MiraPoint mailboxes.   Being on multiple messaging platforms proves challenging from an end user perspective as well as an administrative one.  Incompatibility with calendars and scheduling proves challenging for users to schedule meetings with cross platform users; multiple interfaces required users to logon several times with various credentials.
Moving to a single platform (Microsoft Exchange 2007) will provide for a better user collaboration experience and also provides for a lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).  Users can benefit from single sign-on capabilities for Active Directory, Exchange and SharePoint.

Business Solutions
Partnering with Idea Integration, SouthEast Technologies lead the Lotus Notes and MiraPoint migrations to Exchange 2007.   Utilizing Quest Notes Migrator for Exchange, FIU was able to migrate all Lotus Notes mail, calendar, address books and archived email to Exchange 2007.  To migrate the MiraPoint users, the Microsoft Transporter Suite for Internet Mail was used to bring over mail messages, address books and calendar information to Exchange 2007.

Results
Today the FIU staff and administration have completed their migration to Exchange 2007 and all users are able to communicate seamlessly with shared calendars and contacts.

JEA

Business Need
JEA was experiencing periodic email outages on their Exchange 2000 system.  Their Exchange architecture was running on an unsupported configuration in a two node active-active cluster.  The information stores were over capacity due to no retention policies in place and these was causing inconsistent performance and extremely slow backups.

Business Solution
Working with Idea Integration, SouthEast Technologies assisted JEA in migrating to Exchange 2007 and designing the architecture in a two node CCR cluster provided JEA with a supported configuration and the high availability they needed. Additionally, SouthEast utilized the Quest Public Folder Migrator for SharePoint tool to migrate all of their public folders to Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007.

Results
JEA is now on a current Exchange platform with a supported configuration and retention policies in place to provide the stability, consistency and performance they had been lacking.

In addition, RPC provides on-going maintenance and emergency services to the oil and gas services industry.
RPC

Business Need
RPC was running on older version of Active Directory and was using a POP3 system for their email and messaging needs.  They soon discovered they were outgrowing this system and had the need for more advanced collaboration features such as shared calendars and address books.  In addition, they also required high availability of the message stores and a large number of mobile users needed remote access to their mailboxes while on the road.

Business Solution
Working with Dell Professional Services, Southeast upgraded the client’s Active Directory environment from 2000 to 2003 and migrated 1,000 users from the legacy Email POP3 messaging system to a new Exchange 2003 environment.   SouthEast configured a two node active-passive cluster for the mailbox server and configured two front end servers in a network load balanced configuration to satisfy the high availability requirements.

Results
Today the organization is on a stable and robust Exchange platform and users are able to collaborate using shared calendars and address books.  They are also taking advantage of the highly available mailbox server with no down time, which is increasing productivity.  Remote users are utilizing Outlook 2003 cached mode to provide a local copy of their entire mailbox on their laptops.

ImClone

Business Need
Imclone was looking for a single sign-on solution to eliminate the requirement of multiple passwords for their Windows and Lotus Notes environments.  They were interested in implementing monitoring components for their messaging infrastructure and taking advantage of accessing emails and documents through mobile and web-based messaging.  As a biopharmaceutical company they were also required to provide their users with a secure method to connect to email anywhere at any time.

Business Solution
Working with CGS, SouthEast was able to configure the coexistence environment and set up the pilot program to migrate 100 Lotus Notes mailboxes utilizing Quest Notes Migrator for Exchange.  Because the pilot program took place over several weeks, a period of coexistence was required.   SouthEast provided a coexistence migration plan by configuring the Lotus Notes and Exchange 2007 environments to transfer mail, meeting requests and other data between users as they were migrated from Lotus Notes to Exchange.

Results
Today Imclone is running on Exchange 2007 in a highly redundant environment with single sign-on functionality and monitoring tools in place to take a more proactive approach to administration.  Mailboxes have all been migrated to Exchange and users are able to share mailboxes and calendars seamlessly.
