KAPLAN UNIVERSITY |
Business Needs
Kaplan had experienced incredible organizational growth over the past couple of years through acquisitions and their Exchange 2003 system had reached its storage capacity. Faced with system instability and periodic outages it was time to redesign their current messaging architecture. Additionally, they were planning on migrating to Exchange 2007 and needed insight and direction.
Business Solutions
Partnering with Microsoft, SouthEast Technologies worked with Kaplan on the redesign of their Exchange 2003 system to bring it much needed stability. Capacity planning was the key as they had experienced a very rapid growth period initially and were expecting several thousand more users over the next few years. By adding additional servers configured for high availability and performing accurate capacity planning calculations to satisfy the future needs, the environment was stabilized and migration planning for Exchange 2007 could begin.
Results
Kaplan is now undergoing the implementation of the Exchange 2003 stability plans which will provide them with the consistency needed in their present environment. With stability comes peace of mind and time to plan proactively for future. |

WYETH PHARMACEUTICALS |
Business Needs
Wyeth was running on an unsupported version of Novell GroupWise and the system was not performing up to end-users and management’s expectations. To begin utilizing the features and functions required a GroupWise upgrade was necessary. In addition they needed to update their secure messaging solution with their existing and future secure business partners to meet strict compliance regulations.
Business Solutions
Wyeth worked with SouthEast Technologies to upgrade their GroupWise system to a more stable and supported version. This solution delivered the features and functionality needed for the organization. In addition, SouthEast was also able to work with Wyeth in becoming an authorized GroupWise 6.5 beta tester participant for Novell. This allowed Wyeth users to actively take part in the features and functionality development of a future release of GroupWise at the time.
Once the GroupWise upgrade was complete, SouthEast began working with Wyeth on implementing a secure messaging solution with secure business partners to replace MCI mail gateways with more current technologies and less costly solutions. The following new technologies were implemented to replace legacy hardware and software solutions.
- Tumbleweed Messaging Management Server

BRP (BOMBARDIER RECREATIONAL PRODUCTS) |
Business Needs
BRP and its subsidiaries were running on disparate messaging systems and needed to migrate and consolidate their individual messaging systems into one global Exchange 2003 system. Their Canadian and Scandinavian divisions were running Exchange 5.5, while their American division was running Novell GroupWise and their Austrian subsidiary Rotax was running Lotus Notes. This made communication rather difficult at times with some messaging features not supported by the different platforms.
Business Solutions
By partnering with Computer Generated Solutions and Dell Professional Services, SouthEast Technologies was able to draft and document the technical processes for migrating Exchange 5.5 mailboxes to Exchange 2003 and provide a system health check of the Novell GroupWise system, which proved to be unstable during the migration process. Once the GroupWise system was stable, the migration of GroupWise mailboxes could continue. After completing the Exchange 5.5 and GroupWise migrations, we then focused on the Lotus Notes system in Linz, Austria. By drafting a migration plan and coordinating the migration of mailboxes with the Rotax organization, SouthEast was able to migrate over 800 mailboxes in six weeks.
Results
BRP is now on a single messaging platform with 100% availability and functionality. All users, regardless of where they are located can utilize a single messaging platform with full features and functionality. |

| FLORIDA POWER AND LIGHT (FPL) |
Business Need
FPL was utilizing a secure messaging solution to correspond with their secure business partners and to combat viruses, SPAM and other malware, however the product was not configured optimally to handle the volumes of SPAM entering their messaging system. This sometimes resulted in legitimate email getting blocked or quarantined. This required human intervention to review the quarantine queue and sort through thousands of messages to find a single legitimate message to release and deliver to the end-user. This method was extremely inefficient, too many false positives were occurring and it began to have an impact on users.
Business Solutions
By working with FPL and their chosen secure messaging product, SouthEast was able to provide a solution which allowed FPL to continue utilizing their existing product by upgrading to a more current version which provided more sophisticated, accurate and automated methods of identifying SPAM and reducing the number of false positives by 99.9%.
Results
Today FPL does not have to dedicate an employee’s time to sifting through message queues to find legitimate email that has been flagged as SPAM. The process is automated and much more accurate which greatly reduces the number of false positives. |

| BROWARD COUNTY COMMISSION |
Business Needs
Broward County Commission was running on a legacy Novell system that was proving difficult to maintain and lacked the features and functionality necessary for end-users and management. In order to implement new solutions into their environment, it was necessary to migrate to a platform that made integration of third party solutions easier and less expensive to maintain.
Business Solutions
Migrating to Microsoft Active Directory and Exchange 2003 was the answer to the problem. It provided the County with a less costly solution over time and allowed the seamless integration of necessary third party solutions and utilities. SouthEast worked with the County’s IT staff to draft a migration strategy and developed a lab testing plan to migrate 5,000 GroupWise mailboxes to Exchange.
Results The County is on the Microsoft platform and was able to implement the solutions necessary to integrate into their messaging system seamlessly, which has proven to be less costly in the long run. |
